500 Affordable homes in Nijmegen Winkelsteeg
As the number of people in urgent need of housing continues to rise, the city of Nijmegen realised 500 temporary homes in collaboration with four housing corporations to help alleviate this problem. The buildings are composed of modular units, allowing them to be disassembled and relocated after 15 years.
Seven freestanding blocks are set within a park-like landscape, forming a campus model with shared outdoor spaces. At the entrance of the complex, a dedicated community building acts as a social heart, a place where residents can meet, organise communal activities and build a sense of belonging.
While the buildings share a similar overall volume, each has its own distinct identity, contributing to a diverse, legible and recognisable neighbourhood.
