Food Forum is a meeting place for people shaping the future of food. Located in Floriade Park in Almere, the pavilion sits 2.8 metres below sea level and makes the story of Flevoland tangible by lifting a five-metre-thick layer of local soil up to the sea-level line. The building reveals the relationship between land, water and human intervention, turning landscape into architecture.
The design is rooted in nature-based and circular principles, inspired by natural systems that regulate climate without machines. Like a termite mound, the building is conceived to breathe: using mass, material and airflow to store and release heat, regulate humidity and circulate fresh air naturally. A biobased CLT structure, a breathable clay façade and a thermal-mass floor work together as a passive climatic system, significantly reducing the need for installations while creating a healthy indoor environment.

Circularity is embedded at every scale. The transparent ground floor, built largely from recycled materials, refers to sea level, while the raised level is constructed from renewable materials and finished with local soil-based surfaces. Water, energy, material, waste and food cycles are made visible and understandable for visitors. Key elements such as the lift, kitchen, lighting and furniture are leased, ensuring long-term responsibility and reuse.
Food Forum brings together producers, students, entrepreneurs and researchers — a living pavilion where architecture listens to nature and supports a more sustainable food system.
