Haka Recycle Office

Rotterdam, the Netherlands
The HAKA Recycle Office demonstrates how architecture can generate both ecological and social return on investment. Located in the former HAKA building in Rotterdam’s Merwe-Vierhavens — designated as a clean-tech campus and living lab for water and energy innovation — the project explores how circular design can be directly linked to social impact.

The ground-floor interior was developed entirely from secondary and waste materials, using an alternative production process. Materials from demolition sites and industrial waste streams were harvested, transported and processed on site. Crucially, the production was carried out by ex-detainees participating in a reintegration programme, turning the construction process itself into a tool for empowerment, skills development and inclusion.

The result is more than a circular interior. Research shows an average 70% reduction in CO₂ emissions, material use and labour costs compared to a conventional fit-out. HAKA Recycle Office illustrates how waste can become a resource — not only for buildings, but for people — proving that circular design gains real value when environmental ambition and social responsibility are addressed together.
