Biobased densification

Rotterdam
Three postwar buildings in the heart of the city, a short walk from the central station, get a new layer of housing on top. Instead of demolishing and starting over, we build on what is already there.

The strategy is modular and biobased. Lightweight timber modules are prefabricated off site and lifted into place, so the robust concrete structures below can carry the new homes with minimal intervention. Construction time on site is cut radically, which means far less disruption for residents, neighbours and the streets around the buildings.

The result is affordable housing for starters in a place where they are usually priced out: central, connected and close to everything the city offers. More homes, no extra land, and a much lower carbon footprint.
